OK Senator Says “Relax a bit” to those who oppose about RFID in their ID

April 30, 2010

State Senator Tom Adelson (D-Tulsa) suggested that C4L supporters and other liberty minded activists need to “relax a bit” in our opposition to giving government the power to track our location 24/7.

Do you agree?

HB 2569 is a pre-emptive bill that prohibits the state of Oklahoma from putting any type of RFID chips in our driver’s licenses.  These chips are already being used in Federal Passport Cards and are also used to track cargo.

Because many states have implemented various federal government Dangerous ID programs without the expressed approval of the state legislature, Oklahoma lawmakers are going ahead and banning any move by lame duck Governor Brad Henry from implementing these changes when the legislature goes out of session.

As expected, Governor Henry vetoed HB 2569 Thursday.  When liberty supporters called for an override of the veto, Senator Adelson arrogantly told us to “relax a bit.”

If you agree with Senator Adelson and you believe that it is OK not to ban technology that would allow continuous tracking of citizens by the government, then relax.

But if you think it is dangerous to give government the ability to track our whereabouts 24 hours a day, then you need to contact your legislator and ask him or her to support the override of HB 2569.

Please contact your state legislator today!  You can find their contact information at the links below:

P.S. Government should never have the power to track the whereabouts of law abiding citizens 24 hours a day.  One way we can stop this invasion of our privacy is to ban RFID chips from becoming part of our driver’s licenses and ID cards.  Please call your state legislator today and ask that they support the override of Governor Henry’s veto of HB 2569.

Oklahoma Activists Push Back Against Injustice

Back in November two totally non-violent Oklahoma activists were assaulted and sent to jail by a group of Penn Square Mall security employees.

The two activists were guilty of no crimes and offered no insult yet this group of uniformed men, possessing no more right or authority than what they may have  imagined was bestowed them by virtue of their  matching outfits, took it upon themselves to  viciously assault the pair.

These “gentlemen” were hired to keep an eye out for the safety and well-being of the people who choose to visit Penn Square Mall in order to unload their wallets for the benefit of the merchants who choose to pay the high rent for the use of the property at said mall.   But rather than act like adult men, these employees choose to unleash full force and commit violence by way of response to what could  have otherwise been handled neatly and calmly with a few words.

We are fortunate that these matching shirt sleeved individuals were not armed with more than their fists.

The two activists, who maintained that they did nothing to deserve the assault much less be arrested, got to pay a bondman, stay overnight night in the overcrowded OK County jail, an emergency room bill, some bruises and a trumped up set of charges that could have had a very deleterious effect on their freedom not to mention what it could mean for their opportunities for future employment.

With encouragement and support the two decided to try and clear the record and take a chance on our justice system.  I commend them for their courage.

I went to court to see for myself how our courts would handle the case and to see how the three security guards would hold up under scrutiny.

None of them could quite bring themselves to repeat story that they had told to the police and written in the Oklahoma City Police arrest report.  This was oddly sort of comforting to me.

These men didn’t seem practiced at the art of bald faced lying and for that, I credit them.  Maybe the heavy embellishing in a written police report is an act too far removed from the reality of the harm caused by their words and actions.  But that seems to be too generous a thought.  If you can commit actual violence on another without any provocation or threat, I would have to assume that false arrest and imprisonment or the future effects of a criminal record that that Brent and James faced, did not bother them unduly.

These three lawbreakers will not be subjected to the level of discomfort that they inflicted on their victims.    The  obvious discomfort  and perhaps embarrassment of their short court fiasco plus the exasperation and disgust displayed by the trio’s Amazonian-like  attorney at the  inability of the security guards  to hold their stories, this will be  likely be the harshest punishment that they will face.  I would be satisfied if instead of being sorry only that they were caught, they would be sorry for what they had done.

Either way, they will think twice before they set hands on another again without cause and that is what the justice system, when it works, is for.  The law cannot make anyone good nor can it really make anything wrong, right again.  It can restore some dignity and validation to the innocent and it can set a standard that can sometimes, somewhat stand in the gap for those who have a deficit of decency within themselves yet still desire to avoid the penalties that the law can impose.

I know that this particular situation is a comparably mild example of the injustice caused by those whose job it is to promote justice, however the points made apply all the same.  When we hear stories of police misconduct, we tend to we think that it could never happen to us.  We want to think that the victims must have been doing something wrong and we try to avoid identifying with them so we can feel safe.  As long as we are good, these things could never happen to us.

If you would like to step through a wider window into the world of injustice and abuse of authority, here are a few good places to start. here, here and here, and here (for the one of the most awful examples of brutality and injustice I can think of)

So many people that are treated unjustly do not have the resources to mount a defense.  This is what ultimately convinced James and Brent that they had to try.

Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. -Martin Luther King

HB 3354 Oklahoma Open Carry Goes to the House

10/7/10 update
If you are wondering how it ended….
Passed both houses, vetoed by Gov. Brad Henry.
Failed override vote.
Thank the turncoats with a big fat NO vote in November
(especially Glen “Bud” Smithson who called supporters
of the measure COWARDS!)

“. . . most of them are cowards.”

SUBJECT: Urge AWOL & Turncoat legislators to override open carry veto!

You’re receiving this email because you support the Petition for Open Carry in Oklahoma at http://www.petitiononline.com/oc4ok/petition.html.

House Representative Rex Duncan has stated that he may make another attempt to override the Governor’s veto of HB3354, see http://newsok.com/article/3462793.

Here’s the deal – the open carry bill passed by veto proof majorities in both houses. But after Governor Brad “Veto Happy” Henry vetoed the bill, 15 representatives changed their vote or refused to vote at all for the bill!

It’s one thing for a legislator to stand up and vote anti-gun – that’s at least honest.

But its a whole ‘nother thing to play games and tricks with the people’s right to arms – to hide your vote, duck your vote, and otherwise shirk their duty to take a stand and cast a recorded vote.

Adding insult to injury, incredibly, Representative Glenn Bud Smithson (D-Sallisaw) called open carry supporters COWARDS, see
http://newsok.com/open-carry-weapon-…ad_story_title, but then turned around and REFUSED to even stand up and cast a vote on the veto override matter!

HJR 1054 Healthcare Freedom of Choice Act Needs Calls to the Senate!

Action Alert Courtesy of OKforTea

After numerous procedural attempts to block a vote, House Joint Resolution 1054 passed the Oklahoma House of Representatives on a 71-27 vote today and now proceeds to the Senate.

House Joint Resolution 1054, by state Rep. Mike Ritze (R-Broken Arrow), state Sen. Randy Brogdon (R-Owasso), and state Rep. Mike Reynolds (R-Oklahoma City), amends Oklahoma law to allow citizens to opt-out of the new federal system and retain their current coverage. Another provision will allow the Legislature to file a lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of the health care mandates.

We need to now call, email and fax all Senators to encourage to vote YES! on HJR1054.

Sardis Water Snatching Scheme Afoot? OK Watchdog Reports

By ANDREW W. GRIFFIN

Oklahoma Watchdog, editor

andrew@oklahomawatchdog.org

OKLAHOMA CITY — A grassroots organization called Oklahomans for Responsible Water Policy sent a letter to Gov. Brad Henry last week outlining how they believe an “under the radar” water-snatching scheme, involving water from Sardis Lake, has been hatched and involves a water-oriented interest group, the City of Oklahoma City and the office of State Treasurer Scott Meacham.

Comprised of a group of concerned citizens from Southeast Oklahoma, ORWP, represented by Oklahoma City attorney Larry Derryberry, a former state Attorney General, noted in the letter to Henry that State Treasurer Scott Meacham sent a letter last November to Oklahoma City City Manager James Couch addressing the issue of water from Sardis Lake.

The letter from Meacham states: “Thank you for your letter dated Oct. 21, 2009, concerning the offer by Oklahoma City (the ‘City’) and the Oklahoma City Water Utilities Trust (the ‘Water Trust’) to purchase water storage contract rights in Lake Sardis. During our meeting on that same date, you verbally indicated the City and the Water Trust would increase the cash amount of the offer to $15 million. I have reviewed your offer with the Governor, President Pro Tempore of the Senate, Speaker of the House and Secretary of the Environment, who, in turn consulted with the Oklahoma Water Resources Board (‘OWRB’).”

Tempest, Meet Teapot

There were rumors swirling around this morning that Congresswoman Mary Fallin had contributed to Governor Brad Henry back in 2003, as reported by the Muskogee Politico, and within a few short hours, clarification came from the Fallin campaign.

Apparently, the contribution was not a campaign contribution, but rather money spent on the Inaugural Ball.  One could easily argue the efficacy of such an investment, but that’s a story for another time.
