Are You Seeing Stars on Your State Driver’s License? Say Hello to REAL ID

Kaye Beach

Feb 14, 2012

Are you seeing stars?

If you live in Indiana, South Dakota, Delaware, Connecticut, Utah, Alabama, Ohio, Florida and West Virginia you will be.

A gold star on your state drivers license means that you have yourself a REAL ID card.

The Real ID Act of 2005 imposed federally mandated standards for state driver’s licenses.

Under REAL ID licenses are to be

•machine readable
•contain  biometric data (including facial biometrics)

This and other information is to be shared nationally and internationally.  REAL ID Facts

The federal government with a little help from their friends at the Secure Driver’s License Coalition are putting the squeeze on the states to comply with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005.  You know, that federal mandate to create an INTERnational ID that about half of the states told the federal government that would NOT comply with.

“Heavily criticized by concerned citizens, civil liberties groups, and state government agencies, the Real ID act is opposed by over 600 organizations including the National Governors Association.”  Ars Technica, 2007 More state governments defy congress and reject Real ID  http://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/news/2007/04/more-state-governments-defy-congress-and-reject-real-id.ars

List of states’ Real ID  “refusal to comply” legislation

http://www.ncsl.org/?tabid=13574

According to the Secure Driver’s License Coalition “more than half of the states are close to joining the club that is authorized to place a gold star on its driver’s licenses and IDs.”

Below is a  recent press release by the Secure Driver’s License Coalition where they go on and on about how terrible it is going to be for the poor citizens living in rogue anti-REAL ID states but here is something the Secure Driver’s License Coalition won’t tell you; There are not statutory limitation on the “official purposes” for which a  REAL ID card can be demanded.  The Secretary of Homeland Security, at his or her sole discretion can add any other purpose he or she desires without any congressional approval.

As it stands now, after the deadline(Jan 15, 2013)  is up for states to have implemented REAL ID, we will be required to show our “gold star” cards to fly on a commercial airline, enter a federal building or a nuclear facility but the DHS secretary could decide that the card is required to purchase a firearm or the get healthcare if the Sec. so desired.

Gold Stars Appear, as States Have Less Than One Year to Meet Federal REAL ID Standards for Secure Driver’s Licenses and IDs

WASHINGTON, Jan. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — Airport security screeners are beginning to see stars. That is, they are beginning to see driver’s licenses with gold stars, issued by states which have been certified by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as compliant with federal REAL ID standards. Those states include Indiana, South Dakota, Delaware, Connecticut, Utah, Alabama, Ohio, Florida and West Virginia.

n 2008, the Department of Homeland Security issued a final rule establishing federal security standards for the issuance of driver’s licenses and IDs, implementing a federal law passed in 2005. Beginning in 2009 and continuing to the present, a succession of states have changed their driver’s license procedures to comply with these regulations. The Coalition for a Secure Driver’s License has carefully tracked those upgrades, and is pleased to report that more than half of the states are close to joining the club that is authorized to place a gold star on its driver’s licenses and IDs.

The dozen states that have done little or nothing to comply with the federal REAL ID requirements had best start looking at the calendar. These states have less than a year remaining to notify the Department of Homeland Security that they will begin reforming their driver’s license rules, or their residents will need to start getting passports in order to board commercial airlines.

America is open for business! US-China Conferences in Utah

Kaye Beach

July 20, 2011

“In welcoming China, Europe is swimming with the tide of history; America is struggling against it.”

That is the most coherent quote from this tail-chasing article from the Economist on Chinese direct investments abroad.  The article mostly seems to argue that Americans ought to get over it like the Europeans have and welcome our communist friends in with open arms.  Of course, the article then goes on to admit the English (that is the people of England!) find getting into bed with China almost as distasteful as their American counterparts. You can read that article, Welcome, bienvenue, willkommen, here

Should we welcome China with open arms?  I remain unconvinced.

After reading this report written by Amanda Teegarden, Executive Director of OK-SAFE (Oklahomans for Sovereignty and Free Enterprise) who was our eyes and ears at  the recent US-China Conferences held last week in Utah, I am even less enthusiastic.

Exclusive reporting by OK-SAFE;

Fallin Confirms Meeting with Communist Chinese Counterpart in Utah

Kaye Beach

July 9, 2011

About a month ago, I blogged about the “Little Red Communist School Bus” tooling around the country and OK-SAFE’s (Oklahomans for Sovereignty and Free Enterprise) revelation that on July 13-17, 2011 Governor Fallin will be pairing up one on one with Chinese dignitaries to talk about issues like job creation, education and health at a US-China Governors Forum in Salt Lake City Utah and shared a press release regarding a recent visit to the Oklahoma State Capitol by dignitaries from the Chinese Consulate.

According to the press release, Lt Gov. Lamb praised China’s   “time-honored civilization and robust development” and indicated that” Oklahoma is looking forward to expanding its exchanges and cooperation with China to a wider and deeper extent.”  Lt. Gov. Lamb expressed hopes of visiting China soon.  Read more Oklahoma: The Reddest State Gets a Little Redder and Sleeping with the Enemy – National Governors Association Meeting to Pair U.S. Governors and Chinese Party Leaders

At the time, OK-SAFE was trying to get a document called an MOU (memorandum of understanding) that had been signed 6 months ago by US Governors and Chinese officials. It didn’t take an Act of Congress (but almost!), finally after numerous requests and a Freedom of Information Act filing by Amanda Teegarden, Exec. Director of OK-SAFE, the document has been posted to the State Dept. website. Read more about the MOU at OK-SAFE’s Blog

Despite many calls and emails to Gov. Fallin’s office asking questions about the upcoming Salt Lake City, Utah meeting, the Governor has remained silent until yesterday when her office issued a media advisory.  So now we know that the Governor will attend the meeting but little else.

Foreign direct investment is defined as “investment in the United States by foreign citizens; often involves majority stock ownership of an enterprise;” and “joint ventures between foreign and U.S. companies.”

爱达荷华人社区 Is America being Shanghaied?

Shanghaied-to put by trickery into an undesirable position.

Listen Live from 6-8 pm CT on Rule of Law Radio

First, we will be speaking to Ron Black, conservative media commentator (best know as the 400 lb Gorilla of Oklahoma Media) about  Oklahoma’s Jam in June to Benefit Bikers Against Child Abuse

“As China seeks to make inroads in becoming an economic power inside the United States, they are not just planning to build factories and hire workers, but instead create whole cities and economic zones based on what has already been done on the mainland of ChinaLink

We are pleased to bring you two very knowledgeable guests to discuss this important issue.

Idaho has been all over the news recently as Americans discover that,

“China Wants To Construct A 50 Square Mile Self-Sustaining City South Of Boise, Idaho”

Vicky Davis has been on top of this situation since the start.  Back in January Vicky joined Howard and I on Axxiom For Liberty to talk about Idaho’s Gov. Butch Otters deal making with the Red Chinese or  “Trojan Triangles”  as she describes the plan.

China seeks to build a city and economic zone in the state of Idaho

June 13, 2011 Kenneth Schortgen Jr   Finance Examiner

As manufacturing and American jobs continue to flow out of the US and into foreign countries offering better tax incentives, regulations, and cheaper labor, one place in America is offering China the opportunity to bring their model of planned economy to our borders.

That place is the state of Idaho, and plans are being made right now to build a 50-mile self sustaining city and economic zone that has the approval of the state’s Governor.

The US government has already created up to 257 foreign trade zones in America, and besides the one being planned in Idaho, Chinese companies are also currently in talks with the states Ohio, Michigan and Pennsylvania

Perhaps the most famous of these “special economic zones” is Shenzhen.  . . .If the Chinese have their way, we will soon be seeing these “special economic zones” pop up all over the United States. –. – Idaho Statesman via End of the American Dream

More about Shenzhen’s special economic zone-

Excerpts from China’s All Seeing Eye by Naomi Klein 2008

Thirty years ago, the city of Shenzhen didn’t exist. Back in those days, it was a string of small fishing villages and collectively run rice paddies, a place of rutted dirt roads and traditional temples. That was before the Communist Party chose it. . .to be China’s first “special economic zone,” one of only four areas where capitalism would be permitted on a trial basis.

The theory behind the experiment was that the “real” China would keep its socialist soul intact while profiting from the private-sector jobs and industrial development created in Shenzhen.

. . .China today, epitomized by Shenzhen’s transition from mud to megacity in 30 years, represents a new way to organize society. Sometimes called “market Stalinism,” it is a potent hybrid of the most powerful political tools of authoritarian communism — central planning, merciless repression, constant surveillance. . .

Like everything else assembled in China with American parts, Police State 2.0 is ready for export to a neighborhood near you.

What is good enough for Communist China is good enough for Oklahoma

May 17, 2010 By Kaye Beach

Why was HB 2569, a good bill that would have protected Oklahoma residents from the risks and insecurities of RFID technology embedded in required identification documents such as state driver’s licenses and state ID cards vetoed?

It appears as though the same industry lobbyists that are helping China to enslave its citizens are also involved in killing HB 2569.  Here is the letter Richard Chace, the CEO of the Security Industry Association, wrote to Oklahoma Gov. Brad Henry urging him to veto the bill.  And here is SIA’s press release bragging about their successful intervention in state politics to further their cause.

. . .Here is a  press release regarding an recent visit to the Oklahoma State Capitol by dignitaries from the Chinese Consulate. The article was published on the website for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China but I didn’t see this in the local news.

The press release says that Gov.Fallin  and Lt.Gov Todd Lamb met with three Chinese Consulate dignitaries including Consul General  Gao Yanping at the Oklahoma Capitol to discuss “exchanges and cooperation between China and Oklahoma in all fields”

Apparently Gov. Fallin has been very enthusiastic about China-U.S. exchanges ever since she was the Lt. Gov.

The meeting in Utah between our state Governors and Chinese provincial party secretaries and Governors will be the first of two according to OK-SAFE who is has filed a Freedom of Information request in order to locate documents that should be publicly available in order to find out more.

We need to be asking some questions about this.

The fact that our economy in the crapper, so many people are out of work and we seem to be embroilment in endless war presents a fabulous recruiting opportunity according to the Communist Party.

S is for Secret: Jesse Trentadue Discovers the FBI’s S Drive

Kaye Beach

June 2, 2011

Remember Jesse Trentadue?  He’s the man who has been fighting for 16 years to find out what happened to his brother Kenneth Trentadue who was murdered while in federal custody in Oklahoma City.

He’s still fighting and still uncovering secrets.

Jan 16, 2011 INTELWIRE Reports: Jesse Trentadue Presses FBI on Secret Files In OKC Bombing

Salt Lake City attorney Jesse Trentadue has filed new evidence of secret FBI filing practices in his Freedom of Information Act lawsuit against the bureau seeking files related to the Oklahoma City bombing.

Trentadue this week filed exhibits pertaining to FBI procedures for filing documents while keeping them out of legal disclosure processes such as FOIA or discovery. The exhibits were provided to INTELWIRE by Trentadue.

Judge orders FBI to cough up information about a previously secret computer drive

. . . On May 11, Trentadue says he was in court demanding information from the I-drive when the Department of Justice lawyer representing the FBI mentioned the existence of the S-drive — the first public mention of such a drive. Judge Clark Waddoups, a George W. Bush appointee who was presiding over the case in Utah, ordered the FBI to provide more information about the drive by the end of June.

Two days later, Waddoups issued his written order on the matter, which demanded the FBI affirm whether it had provided “incomplete or otherwise misleading information” to the court and demanded that the bureau search for anything requested by Trentadue on both the I and S drives in response to his FOIA requests.

Utah Campus Cops Out Sneaky Gun Grabbers, Get Put on Leave

Jan 12, 2011

The Salt Lake Tribune reports:

First published Jan 04 2011
Updated Jan 5, 2011

A pair of University of Utah public safety officers are on paid administrative leave after internal guidelines that would ban the open carrying of firearms were made public.

Gun rights activists say such a policy violates state law, and legislators are getting involved in the dispute.

Zachary Wellman, a security guard at University Hospital, said he and another campus police officer were put on leave last week after Wellman shared the guidelines with a friend, who took the U. protocols to gun advocacy groups and state lawmakers.

Wellman said he did it because he believed U. lawyers were going around the Legislature to rewrite the law.

“They’re saying we don’t want [visible guns] on campus, but state law is they have to accept it because they’re a state university,” Wellman told The Salt Lake Tribune. “It is a huge issue because they’re circumventing the Utah law and the university president is now making the law, which they have no power to do.”

In a memo sent to U. Police Chief Scott Folsom last April, President Michael Young wrote that “having weapons in plain sight on this campus creates a fearful and intimidating campus environment.”

Shy Congressman Chaffetz-Not keen on public nudity!#&@$

chaffetz apRepublican Congressman Jason Chaffetz admitted he got frustrated and even used an obscenity, but he thinks airport security was out of line, not him.

(they wanted a naked picture of him!)

“The security is good, and it’s for my protection. I feel that way about it, and so I don’t mind it at all,” said frequent flyer Dick Crossett.

The Transportation Security Administration issued a written statement that said: “This incident will be reviewed.” It also reiterated that a body scan “is always 100% optional” and it’s “an important tool to mitigate known threats.”

“I believe it’s invasive, and I think there are other methods we could use. So, it’s not a line I choose to go through,” a flight attended named Monica told KSL News.

Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz said he was just trying to exercise that right when a security guard told him to change lines.

“They did not make it optional; and when I told them I didn’t want to do it, they started treating me as though I was some sort of criminal or something, giving me the third degree,”

Chaffetz said he flies roughly every four days and has never before been singled out for extra screenings. He said he wonders if one reason could be retaliation–either because of his legislative history with the screening process, or because just days before the disagreement on Monday he’d voted against a bill that would have given union status to the Transportation Security Administration.

You mean this one?

WASHINGTON, DC – Today the amendment offered by Congressman Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) to address privacy concerns raised by the use of Whole-Body Imaging (WBI) machines was adopted by the House in a recorded vote of 310 to 118.  The bipartisan amendment, cosponsored with Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH), was included in the Transportation Security Administration Authorization Act of 2009

http://chaffetz.house.gov/2009/06/chaffetz-bipartisan-amendment-to-help-protect-americans-privacy-passes-by-wide-margin.shtml

After a pat down and full clearance, Chaffetz said things escalated when he asked to speak with a supervisor, identifying himself as a congressman.

“Then, trying to get the supervisor’s name and ID number, the supervisor said to me, “We know exactly who you are,’” Chaffetz said. “At that point, yeah, I said ‘B.S.’ and kind of spelled it out. And, uh, I was frustrated.”

“Unamed Sources” say that the Congressman was obnoxious but Mr. Chaffetz says show the tape, he was not out of line.

The TSA is undecided as to whether or not they will show the tape.

Utah Resident Fights the Fusion

History behind tracking the Utah Fusion Center

June 18, 10:18 AM

On June 13, 2009 I interviewed Steve Erickson with the Citizens Education Project.  The Primary focus was the Utah Fusion Center, which Mr. Erickson has been trying to bring to the attention of Utah citizens.

Fusion Center are not isolated to Utah, they are going up all over the US.

When asked how he became aware of the Utah Fusion Center, Steve Erickson stated he first became aware of the MATRIX about the time Governor Leavitt was on the way out, and Governor Walker was on her way in, which would have been 2004.

The Fusion Centers started being pushed right after the MATRIX program fell apart, so Mr. Erickson began monitoring the issue.  He believes he first caught wind of the Fusion Center coming to Utah in 2006.

The Citizens Education Project used the Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA), which is Utah’s equivalent to the Freedom of Information Act, to obtain information on the development of the Utah Fusion Center.

Salt Lake City has created their own Fusion Center at the city level.  Most recently Salt Lake City  received $3 million from the Department of Homeland Security.  The money came from the Obama administrations stimulus funds, otherwise known as the American Recovery and Revitalization Act (ARRA or bailout #2).

Steve Erickson “looks back” CCTV in Utah

If people are comfortable with passive-invasive technology, so be it,” says Erickson. “But some of us old-school boys remember the government dossiers on us during the Vietnam protests.”

When Salt Lake City watchdog Steve Erickson saw millions of dollars of high-tech spying equipment included on Salt Lake City’s list of “shovel-ready” stimulus projects, it confirmed what he´d been hearing about federal surveillance efforts coming to Utah: facial-recognition technology for Utah Transit Authority buses, an aerial surveillance drone to monitor crowds, hundreds of thousands for wireless surveillance and an artificial-intelligence computer capable of “watching” surveillance cameras for suspicious activity.

[. . .] One item, in particular, on Salt Lake City’s stimulus wish list caught Erickson’s eye: An $836,000 “shovel ready” project asking for a “software program to search, manage and analyze vast amounts of criminal investigation information from wide ranging data sources” and two police officers to run it. A similar request was described in an April 2009 city grant application as “a technology solution to mining for information collected by state and federal agencies.”

It turns out that money is intended for the Utah Fusion Center, a partnership between Utah’s Department of Public Safety, the FBI, the federal Homeland Security Department, the National Guard and local police agencies to create a network of interlinked computer databases and a core of specially trained officers to feed information to the system.

Background-

On January 28th, 2004 the Deseret News ran a story called Dossier program alarms Utahns

It sounds like a sci-fi thriller: a super computer program that gathers dossiers on every single man, woman and child — everything from birth and marriage and divorce history to hunting licenses and car license plates. Even every address you have lived at down to the color of your hair.

They were covering the MATRIX program, which was defeated as far as we know. Thanks to a heads-up from City Weekly we now know the MATRIX is being reloaded as the “Utah Fusion Center.” The Utah Fusion Center is an appropriate name since what it will do is fuse just about any database keeping records on you into one centrally accessible database
