Excepts from the City of Edmond and Edmond Land Conservancy Green Infrastructure Initiative Report to Stakeholders:

Definition of Green Infrastructure
Green Infrastructure is defined as a “strategically planned and managed network of natural lands, working landscapes, and other open spaces that conserves ecosystem values and functions and provides associated benefits to human populations.”
The network consists of Hubs, Links, and Sites.

The Green Infrastructure Initiative Vision

Create a plan and process that commits Edmond to preserving, protecting, and restoring its interconnected natural resources. . .

. . . the priorities for the Edmond Land Conservancy were established before the facilitated meeting..(Emphasis mine)
ELC Top Priorities for the Green Infrastructure Initiative

  • Conserve forest lands in Edmond through a combination of regulations and incentives.
  • Educate landowners and promote use of conservation easements through educational materials and ongoing public awareness efforts.
  • Preserve floodplain and watershed lands through acquisition of conservation easements or, when necessary, whole properties.
    • Continue implementation of the City’s trails plan, with specific suggestions on how to expedite and enhance implementation.
    • Conservation easements for forest lands or open space protection should include provisions for trail access whenever necessary.
    • Protect watershed lands through acquisition of conservation easements or whole properties.
    • Protect important natural areas through acquisition of easements or whole properties.
    • The Edmond Land Conservancy should plan and oversee ongoing public awareness efforts promoting parks, trails, and open space and coordinate with the Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Authority to recruit “green” development and businesses.
    • The Edmond Land Conservancy should research and, when appropriate, pursue various public and private funding sources for trails plan implementation and acquisition of conservation easements.
    • The Edmond Land Conservancy and/or the City should provide recognition opportunities for major donors who support parks, trails, and protected open space efforts.

The Green Infrastructure Initiative Vision
Create a plan and process that commits Edmond to preserving, protecting, and restoring its interconnected natural resources for the future development of the community.
The long term vision in creating a plan will accomplish the following:
1.It will create a GIS layer for the city that can be used by staff, planning commission, and the city council to make decisions and guide policy.
2.It will allow the ELC to better focus their efforts in acquiring conservation easements.
3.It will create changes in city code to provide approaches to construction that are environmentally sensitive, economically viable, and that comply with federal requirements.
4.It will make specific recommendations that lead to more sustainable practices and a more livable community for the long-term.
